Why Gutter Performance Starts With Proper Sizing and Pitch

The most common gutter failure mode in Michigan is not material failure — it is improper sizing or installation. Gutters that are too small for the roof area they serve overflow during heavy rain events even when they’re clean and functioning. Gutters without sufficient pitch toward the downspouts allow water to pool, which accelerates corrosion, adds weight that causes hangers to fail, and creates conditions for mosquito breeding in warm months and ice buildup in winter.

Gutters are the continuation of what your roof’s drainage system starts. Drip edge installed correctly along the eaves directs water off the deck edge and into the gutter trough — not behind it, where it contacts the fascia and causes rot. When we install or replace a gutter system on a home where the drip edge is missing, improperly installed, or damaged, we flag it. A gutter installed on a fascia that is already rotting will not stay up.

How do I know if my gutters need to be replaced or just repaired? 

Age, material condition, and the pattern of failure help answer that. Isolated leaking seams or a sagging section are often repairable. Gutters that are pulling away from the fascia along most of their run, showing widespread rust or corrosion, or leaking at multiple points along sectional joints have usually reached the point where replacement is the more cost-effective path. We will assess the system and give you an honest recommendation either way.

What size gutters does my home need? 

Most homes in Michigan are well served by 5-inch K-style gutters. Homes with steep roofs, large drainage areas, or complex rooflines that concentrate water flow into specific sections sometimes benefit from 6-inch gutters on those runs. We calculate the right size for your specific roof geometry rather than defaulting to one size for everything.

If the gutter damage was caused by a covered storm event — hail, wind, falling debris — your homeowner’s policy may cover repair or replacement.
