Architectural Shingle Roofing

Architectural Shingle Roofing in Michigan

Architectural shingles are the most specified residential roofing product in Michigan. Walk through almost any established neighborhood in Southeast Michigan or Livingston County and the majority of roofs you’ll see use some version of a dimensional, laminated asphalt shingle. There’s a reason for that: the product works. It balances cost, longevity, weather resistance, and aesthetic range in a way that no other product category matches for the majority of residential applications.

But the shingle itself is not what makes a roof succeed or fail over the long term. Installation quality is. An architectural shingle nailed incorrectly, laid over inadequate underlayment, or installed without proper ice and water shield in the right locations will underperform and fail early, regardless of what the warranty says on the package.

At Home Pro Roofing, we install architectural shingles to the manufacturer’s specifications on every project. Correct nailing zones, proper ice and water shield placement, balanced ventilation, correctly integrated flashing at every transition point. That’s what validates the warranty. That’s what gets the roof to its rated lifespan in Michigan’s climate.

What Makes Architectural Shingles Different From 3-Tab?

If you’re replacing a roof that was installed more than 20 years ago, there’s a reasonable chance it had 3-tab shingles. 3-tab is the flat, single-layer shingle that was the residential standard for decades. Architectural shingles replaced it as the benchmark product for good reasons:

Laminated, Multi-Layer Construction — Architectural shingles are bonded from two or more asphalt layers, creating a heavier, thicker product that resists wind and impact better than the single-layer 3-tab format.

Dimensional Profile — The layered construction creates a textured, shadow-line appearance that mimics the depth of wood shake or natural slate. Architectural shingles look better on the roof and add measurable curb appeal compared to the flat, repetitive pattern of 3-tab.

Stronger Wind Resistance — Most architectural shingles are rated to 110 to 130 mph wind speeds. 3-tab products typically top out at 60 to 70 mph. In Michigan’s storm environment, that gap matters.

Better Warranty Coverage — Architectural shingles carry 30-year limited warranties as a baseline, with lifetime coverage on select products. 3-tab warranties are typically shorter and carry more restrictive terms.

Longer Lifespan in Practice — Architectural shingles in Michigan conditions typically perform for 25 to 30 years when properly installed. 3-tab shingles in the same conditions typically reach 15 to 20.

What’s Included in Every Architectural Shingle Installation

Deck Inspection and Preparation — We check every deck for soft spots, rot, and improper sheathing before underlayment goes down. Problems found now cost far less than problems found after the roof is finished.

Drip Edge — Metal drip edge at eaves and rakes. Directs water off the deck edge into gutters and prevents the wicking that leads to fascia and soffit rot. A detail that gets left out on rushed, low-cost installs. Not on ours.

Ice and Water Shield — Self-adhering waterproof membrane at eaves, valleys, and penetrations. Michigan winters produce ice dams. Ice and water shield is how you protect the deck when they form. It goes on every roof we install.

Underlayment — A water-resistant barrier over the full deck surface. If water ever gets past the shingles, underlayment is the roof’s second line of defense.

Flashing — New metal flashing at every chimney, skylight, dormer, wall junction, and valley. Most leaks on otherwise intact roofs trace back to flashing failure. We treat it as a priority on every job.

Shingles Installed to Spec — Correct nailing zone, fastener count, exposure, and starter course. The manufacturer’s specification exists to make the warranty valid and the roof perform. We follow it.

Ridge Vent and Ridge Cap — Continuous ridge ventilation paired with balanced soffit intake and manufacturer-matched ridge cap. Completes the weather envelope and the ventilation circuit at the same time.

Ventilation Assessment — Inadequate attic ventilation reduces shingle life, promotes ice dams, and can void the manufacturer’s warranty. We assess ventilation on every installation and address imbalances before they become problems.

Post-Installation Inspection and Cleanup — Full inspection, magnetic nail sweep, complete site cleanup, and installation documentation before we call the job done.

Architectural Shingle FAQs

Are architectural shingles worth the extra cost over 3-tab?

In most cases, yes. The price difference between architectural and 3-tab is relatively modest, and you get meaningfully better wind resistance, a longer lifespan, stronger warranty terms, and better curb appeal in return. For a primary residence in Michigan, architectural shingles are the right baseline product in almost every situation.

Which architectural shingle brands do you install?

We work with leading manufacturers including GAF, CertainTeed, and Owens Corning, among others. Brand selection depends on product availability, specific performance requirements, and what’s the best fit for your project. We’ll explain the options and our recommendation during your estimate.

Can I upgrade to architectural shingles from an existing 3-tab roof?

Yes. When your 3-tab roof reaches the end of its service life and replacement is the right call, architectural shingles are the natural upgrade. We handle the full removal and replacement process. Visit our Roof Replacement page for more on that process.

Do architectural shingles hold up to Michigan hail?

Standard architectural shingles carry a Class 3 impact rating in most cases. Class 4 impact-rated products are available in the premium shingle category and may qualify for insurance discounts. If hail resistance is a priority, ask about Class 4 options during your estimate or visit our Premium Roofing page.

How do I know if my architectural shingle roof can be repaired or needs full replacement?

Age, the extent and pattern of shingle damage, granule loss, and whether the deck shows moisture intrusion all factor into that determination. We provide honest assessments and won’t recommend replacement if repair is the right answer. Schedule an inspection or contact us to talk through your situation.

The Most Trusted Shingle in Michigan — Installed to the Standard It Deserves

Architectural shingles are the right answer for most Michigan homes. The difference between a roof that performs for 30 years and one that fails in 15 comes down to installation — not just the product on the package.
